Events: Melbourne Day

headerlogoMelbourne Day is a yearly event that celebrates the inception and history of one of the world’s most livable cities. Kicking off with a flag-raising ceremony, live entertainment and a journey through history from settlement to the present day, there’s plenty to see and do.

Events can be found here, and include quite a list of Melbourne attractions, all at a nice discount. If you want to get up close and personal with a few fishy friends, there’s 20% off entry at the Aquarium. Get your skates on at 2 for 1 tickets at the Icehouse, or see the city from a unique perspective at Eureka Skydeck (also 2 for 1), hosting the highest viewing platform in the southern hemisphere. If you prefer something a little closer to the ground, there’s also free Glow Golf at Harbour Town Shopping Centre. The organisers of Melbourne Day have also teamed up with The Comic’s Lounge in North Melbourne to host the LOL Party, featuring Vietnamese comic Hung Le, entry is $15.

Perhaps you want to get a little bit of history? Take a free Melbourne Golden Mile Walking Tour (leaving 12pm, 12.15 and 12.30), visit the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, or book a tour around Town Hall (10am or 1pm, bookings essential at townhalltour@melbourne.vic.gov.au). The State Library is also hosting their Free, Secular and Democratic Exhibition, which traces the first 60 years of history of the library.

If you consider yourself a little bit nautical at heart, The Enterprize will be offering free tours to the public. This full-size replica of the schooner that first brought settlers from Tasmania to Melbourne in 1835, was launched in 1997 in Hobson’s Bay, and has become something of a symbol for Melbourne Day.

There’s also a bunch of deals on food and drink, including a 4 – 7pm Happy Hour at the Melbourne Central Lion Hotel, 50% off the menu at Spire in Southbank, 2 for 1 drinks at Alambra in Docklands, a pie, chips, vegies and a coffee for $5.50 at Cafe 555, and lots more.
